Eh

This one isn't going so well. I have forgotten how to ink apparently.

I'm thinking about doing something a bit different: the background entity/tentacles will be done fully in ink, the wings will have pencil and ink, and vessel!Roz will be done in purely pencil. Let's see how that turns out, shall we? I mainly want to do her in pencil because I honestly don't know how to shade skin with these pens. If you remember, my goddesses' skin areas were left completely blank. Using the smallest tip, lightly, just doesn't cut it with these Microns. Am I doing it wrong? Anyone have any suggestions for pens for "light" shading?

I wish I hadn't inked some of her pants now. -_-; Ack!

EDIT: And looking at this now, I've realized how short her legs are. FUCK.

  1. Ahh, I wish I could show you on-hand how it's possible to do light shading with Microns >_<;; But Copic multiliners 0.03 and 0.05 do the trick for me :) http://www.copicmarker.com/products/pens/multiliner If there's a Hobby Lobby near you, you can buy them there (with a sweet 40% off coupon 8D)

    I couldn't tell that her legs are short o.o;; Still can't (maybe she's 4'11 :P)

This is a verrah cool picture either way. Can't wait to see it inked! *u*

    1. I may need to find some videos to show me; it's getting frustrating. And I'm definitely going to hit Hobby Lobby, or my Reddiarts, to find those Copics. Thank you!

She is short compared to the other characters, but I'm looking at the two halves of her body. The legs don't seem to fit with her torso (it seems too long). Am I just over-analyzing?

It's slowly getting inked. 8D I'll post another WIP with the tentacles completed.

  2. It's the leg that's coming off the page that looks a bit short. The page edge distorts our perception (And I can see how the other leg could be fading down into the distance, but the same perspective doesn't work with the straightened leg.) Maybe the straight leg should be bent, too?

I like how the background and wings are looking, so I hope you are still able to complete this somehow. The bottom left is looking so awesome! The details sort of melt together in a fun way.

As for shading skin, I would suggest going to the library and finding some graphic novels, particularly from before the aughts (because digital painting became so prevalent. There are still good inked books out there, but there's also the presence of pencils or weaker inks with digital paint picking up the slack for shading.)

I recommend the Marvel Essentials, perhaps the X-Men ones, out of both personal taste and the fact they are in black and white, allowing the inks to take the spotlight. (Oh, Mark Schultz is a great artist to look at also!) You can use many different thicknesses of pen and brush (within reason... touching skin with a size fourteen ink laden brush might not be a good move. Depending on how big your paper is.) It just matters where you make your marks and what tone you want (some artists literally don't use inks on the skin aside from minor details. And the art looks fine to me.)

    I hope that helps! ^^
