Supernatural series - A Very Brief "Review"

I recently finished watching the entire series. As in: last night, I saw S7e23. I just wanted to give my thoughts while it's still running fresh.

Before watching Supernatural in full, I had only known about its "batshit crazy" fandom (as some people put it). I wasn't really interested in it when ads for the first season began, for reasons I can't remember, but I have seen a few eps over the years during its syndication. They were amusing, but I just didn't make an effort to see the show from the beginning. However, peeps like Kashoku and Ayashi kept yapping about it, so I kept it in the back of my mind to check it out officially. It wasn't until recently that my interest became piqued by Tumblr and the amusing gifs people made from the show and its actors. (I love Misha Collins's trolling) And I finally found out where certain meme images came from, like this one:
(from The French Mistake, but don't watch this ep alone since you kinda need context)

<3!

So, let's see if I can do this without giving much away:

Plot: The series starts out dealing with urban legends and monsters, with an overarching plot of REVENGE. Two brothers (*brofist*) search for their missing father, who (to me) is an abusive twat. They're a family of hunters, who go across the country to find and kill those creepy creatures which live in our closets and hide under our beds. They hope to eventually find the "yellow-eyed demon" who killed their mother.
Pretty basic premise, but it does become complicated in later seasons, as the Apocalypse looms. Before you go, "UGH, angels and demons. How unoriginal!," I'll tell you to stop and give it a chance. I think the show's take on Christian mythology is interesting. (I'm trying to not give anything away here, so YAY VAGUENESS!)

Characters: To me, this is the "meat" of the show. The main characters are well-realized and I became attached to them pretty quick. (Except for John, what a dick!) Watching the relationship between the brothers, Sam and Dean, was always enjoyable. Okay, maybe not always since sometimes it was sad, but I really got the feeling they cared for one another (and the "fact" that the actors seem to be Heterosexual Life Partners helped that chemistry).
The writers sure like to put these two through the meat grinder, and the bros are constantly on an emotional roller coaster. (MANLY TEARS)  They can be whiny bitches, but I still love 'em!
I also must mention the other characters. I can't really call them "secondary" or "supporting" since they are pretty important. There's Bobby Singer the good and gruff father figure (I just wanna  hug him sometimes. I hope we see him again soon), Castiel the angel (a very popular character, and I can see why. His constant misunderstanding of human ways makes me lol), Crowley the King of Hell (one of those villains you come to like and sometimes root for), Ellen (who can put people in their place) and Jo, her daughter (who, thankfully, became more rounded and didn't remain a "mary sue"), and others. 8D Gotta give props to Gabriel and Lucifer too!

Language/Violence/Sex: There's blood and gore. It can get pretty graphic with the guns, blades, saws, teeth, claws, head-bashings, burnings, etc.. One thing that really annoys me about the show is animal death. It's not really that much, and you don't see the deed. But you do hear their cries and if an animal shows up, it's probably going to bite the dust in some way. I hate it, but I don't let it put me off the show. I just want to warn people in case that's a deal-breaker for them. (But you'll be missing a lot if you write the show off)
There's some sex. Nothing too graphic, but enough to know just what is going on. ^^; Uncomfortably so.
Some harsh language, but no four-letter words. I find this hilarious, considering the aforementioned sex and violence. Our ideals of purity are so screwed up.

Humor: Lots of it, and one of the main reasons why I stuck with the show. Not only does it have the character and situational humor, but the creators also use meta to poke fun at the show itself, other shows (like Ghost Hunters), the actors, the plot, and even the fans. Some of my fave eps are the silly ones, which I think are needed to break up the seriousness (Tall Tales, The French Mistake, Yellow Fever, etc.). It's nice to see the show take itself seriously, but it knows when to cool things down.
One of my favorite scenes from the show (and perhaps from anything)-
Probably funnier once you know Dean's manly character. XD

Slashability:
You may have seen terms like "Wincest" and "Destiel" floating around. I'm not a fan of incest pairings as a rule, but I can ALMOST see why Wincest exists. The two bros are very dependent on one another and act like a married couple (which other characters point out). So, the idea is a bit creepy, but not too far-fetched, honestly. XD
Then there's Dean/Castiel. Why haven't these two kissed yet? ._.; Might as well be canon and I'm saying this without seeing fanart or reading fics and potentially being influenced by those. Other characters also point out their "thing" for each other. It's kind of sweet, really. (And fanservice is given many times)
Sammifer (Sam/Lucifer)-just based on the way Lucifer talks to Sam, it's almost canon. Screw it, it IS canon, in a creepy way. A horribly creepy way. o.O
There's also potential for other slashy pairings, so if that's your thing, go wild. (The creators and actors know about it and seem to love it)

Crossover-bility: (Now I'm really just making up words.) I have seen "SuperWhoLock" around. It's amusing, but I don't see how it could work. Supernatural deals with actual monsters, Doctor Who usually explains the weird stuff with aliens or science and Sherlock uses cold, hard fact. The three may deal with mysteries, but they go through different routes to solve them. *is a buzzkill* I can see it working if characters from one universe fall into another, but making them coexist-not so much.
I do, however, want to see Sherly make god!Castiel cry (because Sherly's a dick and can break people/angels down. Like a dick.).

Emotional Impact: If you get into the characters, prepare for mood ups and downs. Some people really get into the drama. I've only just become interested in the show, so it probably doesn't affect me as much as a fan who has been following these characters for 7 years.

Re-watch? YES! In fact, I'm eying the DVD sets. I will have them soooooooon. 8D I believe there's enough for people to come back. Even with the painful-to-watch-because-they're-so-bad eps, it's still a wonderful series. (The duds still have that overall character humor, which kept me interested.)
I recommend that you watch the seasons' gag reels too. <3

Can't wait for S8!

MUCH better than True Blood. I would explain why I hate TB so much, but that would require watching it again, and I just can't. :P
+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+

Okay, maybe that wasn't so "brief," but one could go on and on with so much material. :P

What's next? Merlin? I have the first seasons of Battlestar Galactica, Stargate: SG-1, and Farscape, but I've had a long list long before those. >.> Hmmmm.

There's also an anime series of Supernatural. And book tie-ins maybe? ACK! This is like DW all over again!

  1. I've seen a couple of episodes of "Supernatural" and well, it's not my cup of tea. And this is coming from someone whose mother said "what? this is YOUR kind of series!" XD

    It might have been the fandom though; it's a reason why I wasn't able to enjoy the new MLP or even get into new series nowadays. They overhype it or go into extreme fan territory as with the shipping x_x I do like the characters themselves and their dialogue and such -- as you said, they are indeed the meat. :) But not enough to watch the entire series. I'll just catch it whenever a new ep is on and nothing else interesting is on. I feel the same way about "Castle" ._.;

Now I want to know why you hate "True Blood" so much 8D I didn't know you got a chance to check it out! Though I haven't seen the new season (which apparently is "oh god no"-tastic), I love it because it's hilarious. They try so hard to make everything so dramatic and serious that it just fails. UTTERLY. In my eyes, at least. I'm sure I'm the only person in the world who thinks that way about TB. I can never take it seriously. And then during the sex scenes I just sit there going (._.) ( ̄ะด ̄;) "mm-hmm" (How awkward it must be for Moyer and Paquin to have done them --ack, unintentional pun-- during the season during fiancee-stage and marriage)

    Which version of Battlestar Galactica, though? The 80s or the 00s? ;D I haven't seen neither, but ^^;

    1. I do recommend watching it from the beginning. I think it works better that way. It may be a monster-of-the-week format in the beginning, but there is a backstory as to why that is so. Some moments are absolute GOLD, and are worth it by themselves. If you still don't like it, then you don't like it, and nothing I say will convince you otherwise (and you won't have to watch the whole thing). <3 I won't hate you. Much.

I'm totally kidding. <3 XD It's not for everyone, I know.

Stay AWAY from the fandom. I've heard that it's wankier than the DW fandom. I'm avoiding it, except for people who I know already (like Kashoku, who's giving me recs). Overhype can kill anything, and I agree that's what happened with MLP. It just wasn't as good as I thought it would be. The first 2-3 eps were interesting because they had a "darker" story, but when that was resolved so soon, I was like, "LOLWUT?" And the rest didn't do much for me.
What's "Castle?" Sounds familiar. *goes to look*

Oh god. True Blood. >_< I kept watching it to see if it got better, and then I continued just because I was far enough already that not finishing would have felt like time wasted.
      (Still felt wasted.)
It DOES fail in the dramatic department, but I think so because I didn't care about the characters (except for Lafayette and Pam). I just didn't give a damn what happened to them and any danger didn't move me. I spent most of my time rolling my eyes or laughing (their FACES of SHOCK. OH SO SRS SHOCK).
And the characters fucked too much. (Bleh, dull.)
A couple of plot threads started out okay, but didn't grab me. (Season 2? My god, how dumb was that?)

I'm glad you like it for the unintentional hilarity. XD It didn't appeal to me in that fashion. I got rid of it quick after watching s4. I won't spoil the ending, but let's just say, I was HAPPY it happened. ECSTATIC. Thank god, YEE-HAW! (Because I'm a bad person) I may watch the first ep of S5 just to see the resolution.

As for BSG-it's the 00's version. I'll have to find the older one, but I don't think it's necessary to see it before the reboot. Or is it? Better find out, I suppose.

  2. I remember hearing about this when I read about the anime adaptation. I think I tried to watch it once when it was on, but it was noisy around me, so I couldn't get into it (quickest way for someone to ruin a show or book for me is to play obnoxiously loud music or talk really loud.) But seeing your positive response to the show, I think I'll give it another chance! It's on hulu, right? My mom is recording an episode for me to watch now, though.

I am interested in mythology of all sorts, even Jewish and Christian mythology (especially of the angels.) And I am relieved to know the series has humor (that's the main deal breaker with me, I guess. Animal death is sad, but as long as no real animals were harmed, then I'm okay.) (And LOL at the face the non-screaming brother gives to the screaming brother.) I hope the violence won't be too much for me, because I do get the cringies with realistic gore.

Bah about the unlikeliness of a crossover. Cracky crossovers are always the best! 8D SuperWhoLock could involve fighting over which method works best!

I'm curious of your impression of Battlestar Galactica. I've watched some of the old version but none of the new version (except a glance when I walked into the room when it was on. And that glance was finely sculpted female buttocks, so I kind of was like whatever.) I hope you do more reviews! This could be another way of luring me into watching more stuff. XD

    1. I still need to watch the anime. I hear it has TENTACLE MONSTERS (since they weren't able to include it in the live action version, but I think the Japanese animators wanted to stick tentacles in for the hell of it). Dunno if I should watch it subbed or with the NA actors. >.>
I dunno about Hulu; I don't use it. But you might be able to catch it in syndication. But I do recommend watching it from the beginning. Which ep did your mum record?
I recently got the whole series on Blu-Ray. YAY! Now I can watch the gore in HD! (But I had to re-order S2. Despite being shrink-wrapped/brand new, the frickin' first disc wasn't there. I was sad and amused at the same time. But really, that's just how my luck runs. OF COURSE I would get the defective set out of the bunch. /ramble)

The Judeo-Christian stuff doesn't really appear until S4, but Hell and demons are a big thing throughout the whole series. I think the first three seasons do hold their own well, but I really love S4 and on. So try to hang in there if you give it a chance.
Good luck with the gore. 8D The show is dark humor, which I love, so I can tolerate more than some peeps.
I would show more funny clips, but I think it would be better to see them within the context of the stories. More impact 'n such. Some of it's so absurd due to context.)

Oh, the crossovers are funny, but logically...no, can't really work. (But who thinks logically these days?) The arguments between the characters would be lulzy.

I watched the first season of BSG this past week. It's okay. Really, just okay. I didn't become too invested in the characters, but the ideas presented were interesting. Oh, and there's plenty of cleavage. I'll watch subsequent seasons from time to time, but it's not #1 to watch. I started BBC!Merlin too, but it's a little TOO kiddish for me. I'll see what happens. They may be reviewed. And I may go ahead and do a mocking review of True Blood, just to show why I hate it so much (with lulzy graphics included, in STICK FIGURE FORM).

    2. I heard there was a big deal about one of the two leads not being able to voice most of the dub, though. If that would bother you anyway (not hearing the original voices), then you could probably stick with subbed. Or watch an episode dubbed and see how good it sounds before making up your mind.

We recorded "Hello Cruel World". As you predicted, I'm completely lost and just got a lot of "violence violence scary violence" out of it. I'll have to see when they get back to the beginning episodes again.

Was it online? Sometimes I think they purposely try to get rid of the defective disks first online, hoping people don't notice or it would be too much of a pain to reship it (because a lot of people buy the disks and they end up on a pile or shelf that may or may not be watched.) At least it wasn't a bootleg.

I totally don't mind illogical parodies. 8D Remember, I thought MPREG was funny (though now I don't want to draw it again... because things get a little creepy and not fun after awhile.)

Yesssss!!!!!!!! I would love to see a mocking review with stick figure drawings. XDDDDDDDDDDD

    3. "A big deal?" Geez, wanky much? I'll probably do subs since that's how I watch most anime anyway. 8D (And it'll be amusing to hear the characters speak Japanese)

Wow, that's from the seventh season, so you're WAY too far ahead. If you don't mind watching just ONE ep online, I recommend "Hell House." It has a nice mixture of yucky stuff and humor. http://www.putlocker.com/file/B0F0E0ACE6AD3DE6#

I ordered them online. But you'd think they check these things in the packaging stage. I don't know how it got passed that and shrink-wrapped. ._.; I got a new one though, so I'm fine. :P
I ALWAYS check disks immediately since I've been bitten before (not counting the bootlegs. Speaking of which, I've seen cheap DW on Amazon from other sellers. But when I look at their feedback, people say they received bootlegs. WRRRRYYYY?! I want 5&6 soon. >.>)

(Why did it get creepy after awhile? o.O Wasn't mpreg ALWAYS creepy?)

Maybe later. :P I don't want to think about TB more than I need to.

    4. Remember, fanboys complain about anything. Like the color of Sonic the Hedgehog's eyes. 8D

I'll see later if it's on the television or if it's ever officially available online. I'm wary of file sharing websites like that. :( (And Avast has been doing the "ding ding ding"s lately whenever I try to visit certain music blogs that I've visited for quite a while, possibly years, saying Avast has blocked an infected script. So I'm paranoid again. The two blogs I've had trouble with share a contributor... the Internet isn't a safe plaaaaaaaaaaace. ;_; )

I hope Amazon bans those sellers. D:

Well, I thought it was funny. But when there is a disconnect and some people think you're drawing it because you think it's hot (like they think, apparently), it gets so awkward. >_<
